Working Across the Alliance Panel
Ann Gates,
The University of Texas at El Paso
María de los Ángeles Torres,
University of Illinois Chicago
Lori Schultz,
University of Arizona
Roxane Cohen Silver, University of California Irvine
Grace Bochenek, University of Central Florida
Details
The HSRU has started its work by relying on leadership and talent across the institutions. During this session, a selected group of leaders will share their experiences convening and leading working groups on ways to implement the goals of the alliance. Each presenter will focus on a different area and share opportunities, challenges, outcomes, and a vision for the Alliance’s future.
Ann Gates – How can multiple HSI institutions in different parts of the country work toward collective goals, especially in STEM fields? What can the HSRU learn from the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions? A brief discussion of the Computing Alliance will connect it with goals devised in conjunction with grant funding.
María de los Ángeles Torres – As the lead of the Crossing Latinidades Initiative, María de los Ángeles Torres will discuss the first funded project undertaken by the HSRU. What have been early successes and ongoing challenges of the initiative? What are the lessons learned and what do you see forthcoming in the future for this and other initiatives to help the HSRU meet its goals to increase graduate and faculty representation of Hispanics?
Lori Schultz – The HSRU established working groups early on to help develop and promote our collective efforts and to help frame our work to external funders. From the data perspective, what has the group learned and what should we be thinking about with regards to the type of data we collect, should collect, and share across the alliance?
Roxane Cohen Silver – The Bridge to Faculty working group was established to help us think through opportunities to diversity the faculty. The group’s recommendations present promising ways to partner with external entities (NSF, ED). What existing initiatives has the working group been drawing from to develop recommendations? What model(s) might work for the HSRU to help graduate students and postdocs become faculty? What would be helpful to make this a reality and what kind of commitments and preparation would be needed?
Grace Bochenek – As a lead of the DOD and DOE working groups, Grace Bochenek will share observations about how the HSRU might draw from its many institutions to develop projects at a large scale. How can the HSRU stay on top of opportunities and be proactive? What kind of information needs to be available or collected to strengthen our case to funding agencies? How would this large-scale effort help us achieve our HSRU goals?
